Jean-Pierre Brown’s artworks series titled BEAST 2023 depicts a vision of chaos, greed and violent destruction due to humanity’s dysfunctionalrelationship with nature. In his vision, humanity is besotted with itself. Humans see themselves as god-like and entitled to all of nature’s resources. Humans harness and exploit nature with a violent and reckless abandon as if it is a god-given right. Humans see themselves as godly because theybelieve that they were created in god’s image.Human’s believe that that which is not human is un-godly, wild, evil and beastly.

In Jean-Pierre Brown’s new series of large-scale painterly collages we see images of humansbattling violently with nature. We see angelic images of beautiful women fighting to the death with wild and dangerous animals. We see images of war, industry, money, greed and prayer. We seearchitectural monuments built to celebrate the glory of god and capitalism. Temples, factories and skyscrapers constructed to illustrate the heights of human prowess and ingenuity. Structures of stone, concrete and steel that stand tall and stand upright as if to howl to the wind and the elements to say

“I am here, I am alive and I have conquered all that is wild, un-tamed and beastly!”

These images are obscured and painted over with chaotic and wild painterly strokes – as if to remind us that that which is wild and elemental has a strength and power infinitely larger than what we are even able to imagine with our limited human perspective. That which is beastly, that which is chaotic and destructive is only strengthened and unleashed by human activity, when that humanactivity out of step with the forces of nature.

Jean-Pierre Brown’s work is a call to reason to fellow humans – embrace nature! Love your wild side!

“BE THE BEAST!”
